Universo Austral: Corpora's Patagonian Outpost

Viñedos Corpora Family Estates and Universo Austral from Patagonia have joined in a strategic alliance, with a view to offering unique-styled wines from the Extremes of South America.  This is Universo Austral’s first Wines of Argentina tasting, having launched four brands and an icon wine at the LIWSF 2008.

The winery produces wines under the Argentine appellations San Patricio del Chañar and Añelo, with 230 hectares of vineyards in full production and a high-technology winery with a capacity for 2,400,000 litres of premium wines. There is a key focus on Pinot Noir (matching Corpora’s passion for premium Pinot Noir in the Bio-Bio), cool climate, unique-styled Malbec and aromatic whites.

French-Canadian, Pascal Marchand, who is a well-known expert in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, heads up the winemaking team. He is supported by Ricardo González (Consultant) - one of the first winemakers to explore vitiviniculture in Patagonia and was involved in planting the vineyards and in the construction of the winery.

Pablo Herrera is Winemaker and will be attending the Wines of Argentina Annual Trade Tasting 2008 with Corpora Export Manager, Mauricio Figari. They can be found on table 55.

Universo Austral will be showing its four brands at the tasting:

  • Universo de los Andes: Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Chardonnay 2007, Pinot Noir 2007, Malbec 2007, Merlot 2006, Rosé 2007 & 2008 (RRP 6.99)
  • Calafate: Corte Patagonico 2007, Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Chardonnay 2007, Pinot Noir 2007, Malbec 2007, Merlot 2006, Rosé 2007 & 2008 (RRP 6.99)
  • Chalten: Merlot 2006, Malbec 2006 (RRP 7.99 to 8.99)
  • Finca del Desierto

Please note that Corpora’s Gracia and Porta brands will also show a new Pinot Noir each from Patagonia

Universo Austral and Pascal Marchand’s goals have been to explore and experiment within the new and exciting appellations within “extreme” Patagonia.  This has resulted in the creation of truly terroir-reflective wine styles.

The wines will be available to both the on and off trade sectors, including one icon fine wine – Alma.
